How to read your open futures positions (size, entry price, PnL, ROE)
How to read your open futures positions
Your open perpetual futures positions are listed in the Positions tab at the bottom of the futures trading page. This article explains every column, the tabs around it, and the empty and loading states.
Where to find it
- Sign in, then open the futures trading page, for example BTCUSDT Perp.
- Scroll to the panel under the chart. The tabs are Positions, Open Orders, Order History, Trade History, Transaction History, Position History and Assets. The Positions and Open Orders tabs show a count in brackets when you have items, for example "Positions (2)".
- On a phone only three tabs are shown: Positions, Open Orders and History (this is Position History). A small order-history icon in the corner opens the full futures orders page.
If you are not signed in, the panel shows a sign-in prompt followed by "to view your positions". Sign in and the list loads.
You can also see the same lists on the Futures Orders page (tabs: Positions, Open Orders, Order History, Trade History).
Columns in the Positions tab
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Symbol | The contract name, for example BTCUSDT. Under it, a badge L (long) or S (short) and the leverage, for example 10x. Click the symbol to switch the trading page to that contract. |
| Size | How much you hold, in the coin of the contract (for example BTC). Green means a long position, red means a short position. |
| Entry Price | "The average price at which your position was opened, including all partial fills." |
| Mark Price | "Fair value price calculated from the index price and funding basis. Used for liquidation calculations and unrealized PnL." See Mark price, last price and index price for the difference. |
| Liq. Price | "Liquidation Price. The estimated price at which your position is automatically closed to prevent further losses beyond your margin." If no value is available it shows a dash. |
| Margin Ratio | How close the position is to liquidation, as a percentage (see below). |
| Margin | "The collateral allocated to this position. In isolated mode, this is the specific margin assigned. In cross mode, it shares the account balance." The margin mode, (Isolated) or (Cross), is shown next to the amount. |
| PnL (ROE) | Your unrealized profit or loss in USDT and, under it, your return in percent. |
A Share icon next to PnL opens a picture of the position that you can save or copy. The window asks you to "Select information to display", then offers Save and Copy. You may see "Image saved", "Image copied to clipboard" or "Failed to copy image". If you have no referral link yet, the window says "Create a referral link to include your code & QR in shared images" with a Create Referral Link button.
On wide screens you can drag column headers to reorder them and click a header to sort. The order is remembered in your browser.
How PnL and ROE are calculated
- PnL (unrealized): "The estimated profit or loss if you closed this position at the current mark price."
- Long: (mark price minus entry price) x size.
- Short: (entry price minus mark price) x size.
- A green number with a plus sign is a profit; a red number is a loss.
- ROE: "Return on Equity. Percentage return on your position margin: (Unrealized PnL / Position Margin) x 100%." If the margin amount is not available, the app works it out as the entry value divided by your leverage.
- PnL here is unrealized. It becomes realized only when you close the position (fully or partly). Fees and funding are not part of this unrealized number; see Futures fees explained.
Margin Ratio colour levels
The Margin Ratio is "Maintenance Margin / Margin Balance x 100%". For a Cross position it is your whole-account ratio. For an Isolated position it is worked out for that position alone using the margin assigned to it plus its unrealized PnL.
| Ratio | Level shown |
|---|---|
| Below 50% | Safe |
| 50% to below 80% | Warning (amber) |
| 80% to below 100% | Danger (red) |
| 100% or more | Liquidation: "When margin ratio reaches 100%, your position will be liquidated." |
If the ratio cannot be calculated (for example the account data is unavailable), it shows "--".
Positions list states
- Loading: "Loading positions..." is shown until your data arrives.
- Could not load: an error panel with a retry button appears if the request failed. Press retry or refresh the page.
- Empty: "No open positions" with "Open a position and it will appear here with live PnL, margin and liquidation price."
- Hide other symbols: tick the box Hide other symbols (top right of the panel on wide screens, under the tabs on a phone) to list only the contract you are viewing. The box is disabled when no contract is selected.
- A position is listed by contract and side. Positions with a size of zero are never shown.
Related tabs
- Assets tab: "Total Equity", "Available Balance", "Margin Balance" and "Unrealized PnL", plus a table with Asset, Total Balance, Available and In Order. Empty state: "No assets" and "Transfer USDT into your futures wallet to start trading."
- Account box on the trading page: "Margin Ratio", "Maintenance Margin", "Margin Balance", "Available Balance", "Unrealized PnL", with Transfer, Buy Crypto and Swap buttons. If signed out it says "Sign in to view account details".
FAQ
Why does my PnL change every second? PnL uses the live mark price, so it moves with the market. It is only locked in when you close.
Why is the ROE different from what I expected? ROE is measured against the margin of the position, not against your whole balance. If you added or removed margin on an isolated position, ROE changes with it.
Why is my Liq. Price a dash? The price is not available for that position right now. Refresh; if it stays a dash, contact Support.
My position disappeared. Check Position History. It was closed, or liquidated.
Why do two devices show slightly different numbers? Prices update live; wait a moment and refresh.
When to contact Support
Contact Support if the numbers look wrong for more than a few minutes after refreshing. Include: the contract (for example BTCUSDT), side (long or short), the size, the entry price you see, the time you looked, screenshots of the position row and the Account box, and whether you use Cross or Isolated margin.
Safety reminder
Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains. Support will never ask for your password, 2FA code, seed phrase or private key. Never share them.
